Shrinking habitat
While the global population of little owls is stable, this small species has become regionally endangered in Germany. The little owls’ ideal territory is a patchwork of habitats including treelines with nesting cavities, as well as field edges, grass verges and hedges, in which their prey live. This makes orchards the perfect home. However, due to agricultural intensification in Germany, these habitats are increasingly shrinking.
Little owls are very territorial. They occupy their chosen territory for several years – often even for life.
